Kari and Caetano's Christmas Fundraiser
Yes folks, you got it right! This Christmas we are fundraising for the Against Malaria Foundation.
We hope that our family, friends and colleagues want to join us in helping those that are in the greatest need in the world. Every year more than 600 000 people lose their lives because of malaria. Most of them are kids. That absolutely sucks, and we have a chance to do something about it.
Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes. Instead of fighting them with knives, guns or bombs, we decided to be efficient and use mosquito nets. Sleeping under one actually gives really good protection!
The Against Malaria Foundation is a great and very cost effective organization that distributes those nets to the people that need it most. One net only costs ~50 kr and protects 1-2 people for 2-4 years.
We also want to motivate you to give more:
- Kari has matched all donations up to 10 000 kr. That means that all your donations up to 10 000 kr goal were doubled. 2 for 1 guys!
- Caetano went swimming in cold, cold winter water when we reached 25 000 kr.
- Kari decided to open her wallet again and matched all donations between 25 000 kr and 30 000 kr.
- Kari's colleague Ruth Wester matched all donations between 30 000 kr and 40 000 kr.

Against Malaria Foundation
Against Malaria Foundation reduces the spread of malaria in low income countries. The organisation does preventative work by distributing insecticide-treated bednets. They help where the intervention has the highest effect, and mainly work in Africa south of Sahara.
It costs 45-50 kr to produce and distribute a net which is used by two people for 2-4 years. That means that 11 kr is enough to protect a person against malaria for at least one year. GiveWell estimates that 56 000 kr spent on this program will prevent a death from malaria. That is approximately thousand times less than what the Norwegian Ministry of Finance recommend the value of a statistical life to be - which in Norway is around 55 million in 2023. It's been estimated that bednets have prevented approximately 450 million cases of malaria between 2000 and 2015.
The Against Malaria Foundation is recommended due to their high cost effectiveness, their openness about their work and results, the fact that they have room for more funding, and their thorough process for ensuring that the bednets reach the right recipient, are used as intended and are in good shape.
